A truly unforgettable discovery! We stumbled upon La Joute in Place Jean-Paul Riopelle after dinner, and what a find it was. The fountain sculpture, created by Jean-Paul Riopelle, came to life in a spectacular "ring of fire and mist." It’s an amazing, unexpected piece of public art that makes for a perfect, spontaneous evening outing.

Superbe à voir à la tombée de la nuit pour profiter pleinement du cercle de feu. le "spectacle" dure 35mn du 15 mai au 15 octobre aux heures suivantes : 17 h 35, 18 h 35, 19 h 35, 20 h 35, 21 h 35 et 22 h 35. mais les flammes ne sont là que 1/4 d'heure, donc pas de précipitation pour y être à 35

This is a sculptural fountain installation that is the work of Canadian artist Jean-Paul-Riopelle (1923-2002). It was originally installed at Olympic Park (1969) but relocated to Place Jean-Paul-Riopelle with the inauguration of the square in 2004. What you see is an eclectic ensemble of abstract bronze figures representing humans and animals scattered inside and outside a shallow fountain basin. At centre is a structure that spouts water upward, falling into the basin throughout the day. In the evenings, there is a kinetic sequence at this fountain, making use of fire jets and fog machines. We passed by during the day time thus only seeing the fountain as it normally stands. Would potentially be worth seeing in the evening as well to see the fountain show.

Beautiful sculpture. I was it expecting to see the fire, but when we got there at around 9:57, it was already burning! Lights up slightly before the hour, I would recommend around 5 minutes before the hour. Great experience!

Lovely place to take a coffee and take a break. Nice buildings and art work.
